============================================================ Documentation for XJMail 1.31.0 by ktkawabe@hi-ho.ne.jp, reishi@anet.ne.jp This is a general explanation of XJMail (in English). The Japanese counterpart of this document is XJMail_jpn.txt. This document explains what is XJMail, what's inside XJMail packages, how to (re)distribute XJMail etc. For installation, please see install_eng.txt. Also you can find the help documentation xjm_hlp.txt (unfortunately this is in Japanese). ============================================================ Table of Contents 1. What's XJMail? 1.1. What's XJMail? ----------------- XJMail is an email client for non-Unicode-build EPOC. (EPOC is the name of the operating system.) It is distributed under a license similar to BSD license. Though it was mainly targeted for Japanese users, of course you can use it for ASCII emails. XJMail offers various merits over standard Email app, including (but not limited to): * Configurable automatic download of emails * Filtering based on mail size * Support for standard authentication protocol * APOP * SMTP AUTH (CRAM-MD5 and LOGIN) * POP before SMTP * Better MIME handling (it can cope with nested multipart for example) * In most of the cases importing from/ exporting to other emailers is easier, as XJMail uses standard MH format. * Support for (and availability of) 3rd-party plugins to extend functionality. You can even write your own one. * Sourcecode is fully open. 1.1. On which devices does XJMail run? -------------------------------------- XJMail is known to run on all of the non Unicode-build EPOC devices except netPad. Up to now nobody has reported us that XJMail ran (or didn't run) on netPad, but there's no reason it doesn't. Following is the list of the non Unicode-build EPOC devices. * Psion Digital (ex Psion Computers) products: Psion Series 5, Psion Series 5mx, Psion Series 5mx Pro, Psion Revo, Psion Revo Plus, Psion Series7 Asian version Psions belong to this category. * Psion Teklogix (ex Psion Industrial, Psion Enterprise) products: netBook, netPad * Geofox product: Geofox One * Oregon Scientific product: Osaris * Ericsson product: MC218 *Diamond product: Mako 2. Distribution packages ------------------------ At the moment three packages are distributed: binary package (xjm???b.zip) source package (xjm???s.zip) WINS binary package (xjm???w.zip (??? is actually 2- or 3-digit number that represents the version number.) If you only want to use XJMail on your EPOC device, the only thing you need is the binary package. 3. License ---------- As far as you follow the terms and conditions in XJM_COPY.ENG (which is an English translation of the original documentation XJM_COPY.TXT), you can do whatever you want, including redistribution. As is written in XJM_COPY.ENG, the binary package contains the softwares from the following developers: Symbian: buffer.sis systinfo.sis Keith Walker: csocket.sis cdescriptor.sis (These sis files are actually embedded in xjmail.sis and are not directly visible to the users.) 4. Mailing list --------------- There's a dedicated mailing list for XJMail development. Anybody interested in XJMail can join it. The natural language of this mailing list is Japanese. Though all of the development issues for XJMail are discussed in this mailing list, you can also ask questions to other users and make suggestions etc. Please do understand that this list is neither meant for the developers to answer to user's claim, nor for the developers to give a solution to the user's problem. Rather, from the user's point of view this list would work as a peer-to-peer support. ============================================================
