Beginners Hindi / Urdu Database, Shareware version 0.9 by Patrick Kerry (PPK@CompuServe.com) Namaste / Sat srii akaal / Assalaam alaikum Hindi is a direct descendant of Sanskrit as is Urdu. However Urdu has also "borrowed" from Classical Persian & Arabic. Thus Hindi & Urdu share many of the same words and unless marked otherwise that translation applies for both languages. I have marked any differences in the notes section... "Hindi" in the notes section, the word applies only for Hindi "Urdu" in the notes section, the word applies only for Urdu If both translations are shown I have indicated the Urdu word with Urdu in brackets after the Urdu translation. We have borrowed many words from Hindi/Urdu (Khaki, Bungalow, Pyjama etc.), they too have taken many more English words into their vocabulary (Doctor, Ticket, Sweatshirt, Pencil, Petrol etc., etc.). In fact it seems that many modern words in English are simply used as part of the Indian language, Just pronounced a little differently ! This makes learning this language a lot easier, if you dont know what to call something try the English name you may well be lucky This is the shareware version of this database just over 150 translations, you may distribute the complete Hindi.zip file freely. For the full version, currently 370+ words, ( continually being added to.) please send £10 (UK) cash or cheque to P.P. Kerry. 4 Rembrandt close Wokingham Berks, RG41 3BL I will send you the full version via email This is not intended to be a complete database, it is more suited as a companion to any of the beginners courses available today, or as a quick translator whilst in India. I created it for my own reference whilst learning Hindi myself and I have found it very useful ever since. To use this database on your Psion 3, 3a & 3c just place Hindis.dbf in the DAT directory of your Psion. Dhanyavaad aur Shukriyaa, Patrick. Oct 1997.
