******************************************************* This is a copy of "Just What I Need" (or "JWIN") v1.52F (Build 0566) for the Psion 3a/3c/3mx/Siena ONLY. It is a SHAREWARE utility program. THE AUTHOR (Phil Spencer of Aylesbury, England) SHALL NOT BE HELD LIABLE IN ANY WAY FOR ANY DAMAGE THAT MAY OCCUR TO YOU AND/OR YOUR SYSTEM AS A DIRECT OR INDIRECT RESULT OF USING THIS PROGRAM AND/OR ANY ASSOCIATED FILES. ******************************************************* INSIDE THE ZIP *************** Jwin.opa (ESSENTIAL main program file) Jwin.dat (ESSENTIAL conversions database) Jwin.hlp (OPTIONAL help file) Swatches.ovl (OPTIONAL stop watches module) Quikcalc.ovl (OPTIONAL calculator module) Modules.txt (details about modules and writing them) Jwin.txt (this file) VERY IMPORTANT NOTE!! ********************* Please install the on-line help as this provides the best guide to all of the programs features. I don't like long read me files because people tend to just skip them and end up not knowing how to use the program. To this end I've tried to keep the file as short and as small as possible. This means that none of the features are explained and that there is no in-depth "how to use me" guide. However, all of this is in the file "Jwin.hlp" and if you want to know how to use JWIN then you NEED to install the help. After all, once you get the hang of JWIN and its many features, the help can be deleted! FIRST TIME INSTALLATION *********************** Put Jwin.opa in an \APP\ directory on any drive. Then create the directory of \APP\JWIN\ on ANY local drive (e.g. A:\APP\JWIN\). Into this, put the files Jwin.dat, Jwin.hlp, Quikcalc.ovl and Swatches.ovl - if you don't want the calculator, stopwatches or help, feel free to delete or just not install them. UPGRADING FROM RELEASES PRIOR TO v1.50 ************************************** Overwrite the old Jwin.opa in your \APP\ directory with the new one supplied here. Then create \APP\JWIN\ on ANY local drive (e.g. A:\APP\JWIN\). Your previous version of JWIN will have used a directory called \JWIN\ (e.g. A:\JWIN\) so using a File Manager (e.g. Files on a 3c) or the System Screen's 'Copy' command, copy all of the files from the old \JWIN\ directory to the new \APP\JWIN\ one. You can now remove the old \JWIN\ directory with the appropriate File Manager or System Screen command. Into the new \APP\JWIN\ directory, put Jwin.dat, Jwin.hlp, Quikcalc.ovl and Swatches.ovl FROM THIS .ZIP FILE (overwriting any existing copies of them) - if you don't want the calculator, stopwatches or help, feel free to delete or just not install them. There you have it! NOTE: PLEASE AVOID USING FLASH DISKS FOR THE \APP\JWIN\ DIRECTORY AS WHEN JWIN TRIES TO COMPRESS IT'S FILES, MORE SPACE WILL BE USED - JWIN IS NOT "FLASH FRIENDLY". RevTran ********* This program has been protected against reverse-translation to the best of my abilities and ANY ATTEMPT TO HACK AND/OR REVERSE-TRANSLATE THIS PROGRAM IN ANY WAY IS IN VIOLATION OF THE LAW! About the program ***************** I wrote this program because I wanted to have a collection of general utilities that were useful and quick to access, but didn't take up a huge amount of space. After much development (spending far much more time than I should have done on the code!), I thought that the program was in an acceptable state to be publicly released, and more importantly, to be of use to other Psion users. About the Author **************** I'm called Phil Spencer and I'm 18 year old from Aylesbury, UK. I've been using OPL for about 2 years, and am learning even more each day! That's all you need (and should want!) to know :-) Bug reports/suggestions *********************** The program appears to have no bugs but if you find any or have any comments/suggestions for future versions then I welcome your input either by: E-mail on nicko@nildram.co.uk (preferred) OR Pkspencer@compuserve.com OR by Snail-Mail at: 10 Prebendal Court Oxford Road Aylesbury Bucks ENGLAND HP19 3EY Updates of JWIN (and all my other programs) can be found on my web page at: http://www.spencer.nildram.co.uk/ You will also find a more comprehensive 'Contacts' page there with other ways to get in touch with me. Disabled Features ****************** JWIN is FULLY WORKING shareware. This means there are NO, yes that's correct NO, disabled features in JWIN while it's unregistered. The only things you will see to remind you to register are nag screens on start and exit. There is a limit of 25 days for usage in the unregistered form. JWIN will NOT stop working after this limit, but you will get an extra nag screen, and you will also be nagged every time you switch to JWIN. Registering *********** JWIN v1.52F is distributed as Shareware and you may use it in it's unregistered form for 25 days. If, after this trial period, you find JWIN useful, then you MUST register! To register the program on CompuServe, GO SWREG 13871, otherwise you must: Send 10 UKP/15 USD (or another foreign currency equivalent PLUS 10% extra) to my Snail-Mail address with either your E-mail address or with a stamped SAE. This will enable me to send you your personalised Key-Code to unlock the program's features and banish the nags forever. The final alternative is to use the excellent RegNet service and register JWIN by going to: http://www.swregnet.com/530p.htm When registered you will be entitled to any future upgrades FREE, you also get to take advantage of the new versions before many users as all new versions will appear on my homepage BEFORE they're released to other places (e.g. CompuServe's Psion Forum). You also get a direct say in future developments and more importantly a clear conscience! 10 UKP isn't a lot to register and it'll help me develop future versions (and other programs). I don't have much time free as I'm doing my A Levels so I need an incentive :-) Company/multi-user use of JWIN requires an individual registration for *EACH* copy being used. However, I do offer significant "bulk buy" discounts on JWIN's price. If you want to take advantage of this, please contact me (see above for addresses, etc.). A Brief "How to use me" guide ***************************** There's not really much I want to say here - as you'll see, JWIN is *very* easy to use and understand. However, the on-line help is very detailed so I urge you to install it at least until you know about all of JWIN's functions. JWIN has been designed to be left open all the time and has been given the ability to detect a hotkey of it's own without you having to assign one to it from the button bar. This hotkey is governed by the "Set preferences" section and it's up to the user what they assign JWIN, the default is Control-J. However, this only works if you DO NOT leave JWIN showing a menu or dialog. If you can afford to (i.e. have spare System key combinations), then it's far better and more reliable to assign JWIN a key from the Button Bar. All in all, JWIN is a very straightforward program to use and it's very easy to get the hang of it and use it to it's full potential. Remember, if you do find JWIN of use to you, then you MUST register after 25 days ;-) Thanks to... ************* I would like to thank STEVE LITCHFIELD for his help and suggestions. ALEX WILBUR was also a *great* help in providing me with bits of code for Quick Calc and the hotkey function. Also, JOHN BOYCE for beta testing on a "real" Siena and HANS TROMP for help in re-designing certain parts of the code from v1.2x, and also his testing and suggestions! BILL BELFIELD provided me with the "Numerical convertor" which was a huge help. FREDY OTT who helped me out a lot with beta testing and some ideas. My other beta testers also appear :-)) to have done a good job. JWIN's history ************** There have been several releases of JWIN, and over time this has meant a lot of changes/feature additions. To stop this readme file from getting too big, I've left out a full history. If you really want one (!) then please contact me (see above) and I'll send it to you. Alternatively, there is an on-line copy on my web page. JWIN Version 1.52F (Build 0566) Copyright (C) Phil Spencer 1996-1998, All rights reserved. RELEASED Wednesday 7th October 1998 Phil Spencer
