Introduction

Welcome to Tgfm, a program to edit Psion Series 3a/c/mx and Siena group files. Group files form a very handy component of the System application of the Series 3 which allows the user to combine installed and builtin applications to so-called groups, which appear as one icon on the System screen that otherways tends to become overcrowded if there are many additional applications.

However the System application lacks some group file features. Once created, the icon of a group cannot be changed. Or, if a program that was present in a group file is deleted, the group can no longer be accessed. Tgfm can bring such group files back to life. You can add and delete entries as you wish and you can change the icon of the group.

Tgfm was written in the Java programming language; therefor it will work on any plattform that is JDK 1.1 enabled (Linux, Windows 9x/NT, MacOS, Epoc devices running ER5 and above). Now you might ask why it was not implemented in OPL so that it could work on the Series 3 itself. In fact, the availability on the target machine sounds promising, however the relatively small display does not seem suitable; and one important feature of Tgfm is to change group file icons but this means that the user would have to copy his/her icon library onto the target machine to have it available on the road. Finally, my trusty 3mx gave way to a 5mx pro; as a result programming would have to be done using the emulator, which may be an option for testing the group files but not for the task of programming.

The installation of Tgfm takes just a few steps and is explained in section Installing and running the program. Tgfm is shareware. The program is not limited in functionality, but nag screens will appear in many situations. To get rid of them you have to pay the requested shareware fee. Please consult the section How to register for details.
