I can relate! (You should have also read the newuser.txt file describing the basics of Notepad) The easiest way to successfully do a Quick Start with Notepad is to understand what the program does, and to memorize some of the fast ways of getting around. Here we go... What does Notepad do? Notepad organizes ideas, lists, projects, rough schedules, etc. Notepad is not a structured type of project planner with graphs, but it is a free form note taker for organizing notes. Most users will find that it does a fine job of organizing your ideas and todo's. It certainly will do some things that the Agenda Todo lists will not. The Agenda doesn't intelligently handle ideas and todo's that need to have association with other lists, or application files. With Notepad's new DataLink, you can use Notepad as a contact manager. The DataLink will link a note to a particular record in any database. So, a notepad is a list of notes. Each note can be associated with other lists of notes, application files, or database records. Terminology: Some have been confused by the terminology used in our manual, so to give you a headstart, here are the key terms used: Notepad - The program name notepad - A list of notes note - A single note in a list of notes Application Link- links a note to an application file Expanded Note - links a note to a different notepad Outline - A notepad with expanded notes becomes an outline Top Level - The main notepad, shows under icon on system screen A note in Notepad is... . A todo list item . An Idea . A Project related note . A Link to some application file For example, I have a project called "Notepad 5.0". While I'm working on this project, I can enter ideas, bug reports, etc., and expand each note that is big enough to have it's own Notepad. This explains an important feature in Notepad, which is the ability to expand a note. Expanding a note links a single note to a new notepad. This makes the note a subject heading, and the notepad is the list of notes related to that subject heading. Here's an example: Top Level Notepad ----------------- 1. ToDo ----1. Use Buttons 2. Notepad 5.0 ---- | 2. Sizable Screen 3. Business | | 3. Zoomable fonts 4. Home projects |--- 1. User Interface - 5. Bills --- 2. Documentation - | | | | | -- 1. Mortgage |-- 1. Shift not working 2. Electric 2. Process Exited... 3. Auto loan 3. Menu %S not responding Note: The above represents a group of related notepads. They are separate lists. You only see one list at a time in Notepad. You can quickly expand any item in a list by pressing the right arrow key. The number of levels is limited only by available memory. This means that you can have an unlimited number of lists. I don't recommend going too deep though, or you may get lost. :^} How do I Expand a Note? You can expand a note by highlighting it, and pressing the Right arrow. Notepad will pop up a dialog that says "Expand This Note on...", letting you choose which drive to create the new expanded notepad on. Give it a name, one that makes sense, and press Enter to create your new notepad. To get back to the previous notepad, press the left arrow key. This way the left and right arrow keys become your keys for moving through the notepad map. Note on notepad names: A new notepad name can be up to 8 characters, and must be a legal DOS filename. If you are not familiar with the rules of DOS file names, just use a-z characters only, and no spaces. Characteristics of a note: 1. They can be up to 510 characters long. 2. They can have these extra characteristics: a. Be expanded to another notepad b. Have alarms attached c. Be linked to another Series 3a application (Word, Data, Sheet, or Act) d. Have Starting and Due Dates attached Now, if you understand that Notepad can create lists of notes, where each individual note can be a project heading, single note, alarm, launching pad, you're ready to start memorizing some simple key commands. Of course you could just use the pull down menus but it's faster to learn the key commands. Don't worry, we're almost done! The first four are the most important: *Expand a note - Right Arrow key *Return to last notepad - Left Arrow key *Quick List - Escape key *Jump to Top Level Np - Psion Enter a note - A, or Psion or Shift Update(Edit) a note - E, Psion or Enter Psion - Psion (Note Details) Control - Edit DataLink Search Text Attach an alarm - Psion (Note Details) Set a Due Date - Psion (Note Details) Link to a S3a application - L, or Psion Edit Application Link - Psion Shift, or Shift Jump to the Project Viewer - P, or diamond Write a note to Agenda - Psion Shift Graphic Map for navigation - M, or Psion Note: Single keypresses are only valid when the button bar is visible. Hint: The left arrow key will go back to the last notepad. It will go back up to five levels. A quick way to get to the top notepad is to press Psion. or... The Quick List always puts the top level notepad on the top of it's list, so you can also press Escape. This will always take you to the Top Level Notepad. ******** That's it - You're ready to use Notepad ******** See section 1-4 for an overview on how Notepad works. If you understand what Notepad can do, you'll be able to jump right in and get started. Of course there are many other tools and features that you'll learn along the way, but this will get you started. Install the application using the installer if possible. (It's faster!) SECTION [1-1] Registration $39.00 US Dollars Notepad can be registered in various ways. . Compuserve On-line registration via "Go Swreg" SWREG ID = 273 . By Mail . Call Pelican Software Inc. at (713) 242-8928 In June 1996 we should be able to accept credit card orders. The most convenient method is through Compuserve, by going to "Go Swreg" while on-line. This is a service provided by Compuserve whereby they will charge you for the registration fee, take a percentage for their troubles and give the rest to the author. This should make the prospect of paying for shareware a little easier. When using the shareware registration area, you may need this info. You must have a Compuserve account to use this service. Shareware Software Name: Notepad ID: 273 Price: $39 Notepad is also available on America Online, Cix, and the Internet. The easiest way to get updates is from Pelican's Web homepage. The address (URL) is ... http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Pelican If you don't have access to one of these BBS's you can call Pelican, or write. We can send out your disk as soon as payment is received. Notepad is distributed on IBM floppy disk, (any size) or MacIntosh floppy.(2DD or 2HD). If you must have Notepad on an SSD it can only be sent on a new type of ROM SSD, which will raise the cost of the program by around $30. Call for a price if you need Notepad on an SSD. Notepad is shareware. You can use it free for 21 days, although some features are disabled after the 21 day trial period. All crippling has been removed to give you a better chance to try to program out. At the end of 21 days the program still works, but a few of the features stop working until the program is registered. Payment should be mailed to and payable to: Pelican Software Inc. PO Box 741072 Houston, TX. 77274-1072 INTERNET users: The easiest way to pay for Notepad if you're out of the USA is to send cash through the mail. We've never had a problem with this yet. Of course it's at your own risk. This software represents many hours of programming. If you like it and pay for it, we will be able to continue to provide application software for the S3a. SECTION [1-2] Installation ----------------------------------------------- MEMORY NEEDED: Complete Install (includes Server) 248k Without Server 198k Note: We now offer Notepad Lite as a smaller package. With the Server it takes around 168k. Look for Nplite.zip ----------------------------------------------- PsiWin Users: - PsiWin doesn't support batch files for doing automated installations, so that means that none of the installers will work. You can either try Rcom, which comes with PsiWin, and can be run from Dos or Windows, or you can install the files manually by dragging and dropping them in PsiWin. If you choose to do this, read on for the file list and the directories that you'll need to create on the Psion. To install Notepad you can use the installers that come with Notepad. Included are installers for MCLINK and RCOM. installa.mcl MCLINK - copies files to S3a Disk A installb.mcl MCLINK - copies files to S3a Disk B installm.mcl MCLINK - copies files to S3a Disk Internal Install.bat RCOM Installer USING MCLINK - To install Notepad using MCLINK, run MCLINK from the same directory where you have your Notepad files. If you have MCLINK in your path, you can move to your Notepad directory and just type in the command that you use to start MCLINK. If it's not in your Path (If you're using a PC), then you'll need to type in the full path of MCLINK to start the program. (If you have MCLINK in a Psion\Mclink directory, you would type in \Psion\Mclink\Mclink) Once you've got MCLINK running, and the Link is established, type in @ plus the name of the installer that you want to use. There are three MCLINK installers. Use the one that copies the files to the Drive on your S3a that you want to use. To copy all files to SSD Drive A, you would type in @installa.mcl. Don't forget the @ character. This tells MCLINK to run an existing batch file. USING RCOM To install Notepad using RCOM, run RCOM and move to the directory where you have Notepad. Type in Install x: where x: is the drive on your S3a where you want Notepad installed. SECTION [1-4] Overview Notepad is a Todo list/Project manager. It allows you to create notes as you need them by typing in a full screen text editor. When you are finished typing in a note you will have the option to define this note as a Project that should complete on a certain date. You will also be able to attach an alarm to this note, link it to other Series 3a applications, or write the note to your Agenda. Notepad has been set up to be just like a physical notepad. Taking personal notes or work/project related notes should be simple and fast, to make it convenient. Along these lines, Notepad also comes with a separate application to save a quick note. It is called Fastnote.opa. It can be installed to the system screen and run as a separate application. It opens in a second and you're ready to start taking notes. All notes created in fastnote.opa can be easily viewed in Notepad. Notepad has an auto merge feature to bring in these notes to the currently open notepad. If you leave Notepad running all the time, there is not much need for Fastnote. Assign a key to Notepad from the system screen by pressing Psion. This will make it fast to get to Notepad for a quick note. As a type 3 application (In S3a terminology), you can run multiple notepads, or change notepads from the system screen by pressing enter while highlighting the notepad file you want to change to. Or you can create new Notepad files from the system screen by pressing Psion. Your notepads can get as big as you like. I have found the best way to use Notepad is to keep it open and to assign a hot key to it. Decide which key combination you want to assign to Notepad. Control+Agenda might make sense if your not already using it, or a single icon that you never use. As you add entries you will find you need alarms set for some of them. Press Psion to set an alarm. Notepad alarms work identical to the way the S3a alarms work. The alarm will ring whether you are in Notepad or not. (See Section 5 and 11 for info on alarms) When the alarm rings, you will have the option to press a snooze button, and the alarm will go off again in the amount of time set by you, or default (60 minutes). This is unique to the Pelican Server application that runs with Notepad. If you don't want the alarm to go off until the next day, you can also reset the alarm to a different day, or hit the tomorrow button. The tomorrow button resets the alarm to a preset time the next day. Notepad also supports repeating alarms. See the section on alarms for all of the details. If you get into a situation where you have multiple notepads that really could be combined, you can go to "Merge" and merge the notepads together. If you enter a note that has a calculation in it, you have two tools to help you out. First a pop up calculator. You can figure out your calculation, then put the amount into the note. The second option is to just enter the calculation in the editor, and use the Evaluate option on the menu. Notepad will link individual notes to other notepads or project files, so that with the press of a key, any note, or idea can be expanded to its own group of notes. A project can have a Due date attached to it and then viewed in the Project Viewer. This is very simple to do since it only requires saving the note with a project Due date. You have the option to add or change the Due date of any note at any time. These features are very easy to use once learned conceptually. There are a few key commands to learn to make it all work fast. For example to expand a note, which lets you build a new list under it, making it the heading, just press the right arrow key. To link a note to a S3a application just set the cursor at the note you're interested in and press Psion. The first time you do this you will be asked to identify which program and file you wish to link this note to. Notepad will link to Word, Data, and Sheet. (See the section on Application Linking for more info.) If you have attached Due dates to your projects press the diamond key and the Project Viewer comes up showing up to 10 projects for each day. (See section 12 to learn more about the Project Viewer.) Another very powerful feature of Notepad is the ability to link a note to a S3a application. Notepad will launch the application if it's not running. (See the section on Application Linking) SECTION [1-5] Disclaimer: Pelican Software Inc. takes no responsibility for any lost data, or hardware malfunctions of any kind, due to the use of this software, or any other software that ships with Notepad. SECTION [1-6] Memory Usage: Notepad is flexible with it's memory usage. You can make some trade-offs to set Notepad to use less memory. There is a preference called "Use Less Memory (More Redraws)". If you set this to "Yes", Notepad does two things to conserve memory. 1. Uses the same window for the editor and main screen. This causes Notepad to need a redraw after exiting the editor. It takes 15k to open the editor window when it uses it's own window. It takes 7k to run the editor when it uses the main screen window. 2. Closes windows when in the background. Notepad detects that it has gone into the background, and it shuts it's windows down. Notepad uses around 37k when in the background to run. It uses around 47k when "Use Less Memory" is set to "No". Notepad uses around 40-50k of Ram to run normally. When you are in the project viewer this number will be around 70k due to the extra window that is open. Therefore, you might want to exit the viewer when leaving Notepad, if your memory is low. The Server (Server.opa) uses about 20k of Ram to run. SECTION [1-7] Button Bar: The button bar is removable in Notepad. You can remove it in the preferences, or toggle it by pressing Psion. This is a major improvement as it allows for viewing more notes when the button bar is disabled. When learning the program, you may like the button bar since it suggests appropriate actions to you. SECTION [1-8] About the new Dialing features: The new dialing features can be a big time saver, especially if you can get hooked up to a modem during the day. The dialing features have been tested with a US Robotics 14,4 desktop modem, and a 3Fax modem without any problems. The idea behind this feature is to be able to quickly call up a list of frequently dialed numbers, press a few keys and let the modem dial your number. Take the time to set this up and you won't be sorry. Notepad will insert your credit card number + PIN when you're in the hotel room, or out of the office. See section 10-2 for more on setting it up. SECTION [1-9] What is Fastnote? Fastnote is a separate application that comes with Notepad. The file is called Fastnote.opa. It should be copied to any \App directory on the Series 3a. Install the icon by pressing Psion at the system screen. Once installed, fastnote can be run like any other program. Fastnote is a small program that accesses Notepad's text editor, so that you can enter a quick note, regardless of whether Notepad is running or not. The whole purpose behind Fastnote is quick data entry. You can leave it running and assign a hotkey to it from the system screen. (Psion) When a note is saved to the Fastnote notepad, it can be opened in Notepad quickly by pressing Psion Shift. You can then move notes individually from the fastnote notepad to another notepad. SECTION [2-1] Installing Notepad on the system screen: Once you have Notepad copied to the S3a, from the system screen, press Psion to install Notepad. If you put the file into the \App directory, it will show up on the list of applications that can be installed when pressing Psion. After installing, run Notepad from the system screen by highlighting it and pressing Enter. You will be asked to Register your copy of Notepad. If you don't want to register at this time, press Escape. You will be given 21 days to use the program to see if you like it enough to buy it. The program still works after 21 days, but you will be urged to register. To register your copy, type in your name, and registration number, which you will get from Pelican Software Inc. when you pay the registration fee. *** Note *** "Register" will show up as a menu option if you are not registered. SECTION [2-2] Auto Name Expanded notepads Preferences/Files When pressing the right arrow key, notepad will normally prompt you for a name for an expanded notepad. It is helpful to set up notepad names that you will recognize later. However, if you don't want to take the time to name new expanded notepad's, you can go into the preferences, and choose "Files". Next, set the line "Auto Name..." to Yes. Hereafter Notepad will name the expanded notepad's for you. Notepad will try it's best to come up with a sensible name, based on your note. In some cases it won't find a name based on your note, and will use the first 4 characters of the current notepad, plus a number code. For example, a note in the Top Level Notepad called "Master", may expand to a new notepad called "Mast2345". This is based on the format of your note. If you expand a note called "Pelican Software", Notepad will expand this to a new notepad called "Pelican". No problem in this case. However, with a note like "The Gas pipes need to be fixed", Notepad will not try to create a notepad called "The". In fact, Notepad will skip the word "The", and try to get the second word. If the second word is at least 4 characters it will be used as the filename. If not, Notepad will generate a number. Note: If you need to name an expanded notepad, but you have set the preferences to Auto Name, press Control instead of just the right arrow key to expand. RENAMING AN AUTO NAMED NOTEPAD - If you don't like the name given to an auto named notepad, go to the note that was expanded, and press Control. Type in the new name and Notepad will rename the expanded notepad, and update the link info in the current note. SECTION [2-3] Shortcut key/single key stroke commands: * = When top button bar is visible 1. Enter = Edit Note 2. Tab = Calendar 3. Home = First Note 4. End = Last Note *5. A = Add a Note *6. Control = Bypass Auto Naming of expanded notepad 30. Control = Rename expanded notepad SECTION [2-4] On-line Help: Extensive On-line help is available in this version by pressing the help key. The actual Help text is in the file called Nphelp.rsc. This file should not be edited. Also , many dialogs support the help key. For example, press escape to bring up the Quick List Options, press Help. Help from Dialogs: Certain dialogs are help sensitive. That means that with a dialog displayed, you can press the help key to get some quick help for an explination of the choices in the dialog. Not all dialogs support extra help. Hotkey List: Press Control to bring up a list of special hotkeys. SECTION [2-5] Archive & Log features overview Notepad has multiple levels of saving notes that are done. 1. Default Archive 2. Your own Archives 3. Log file The Default Archive is for users that will not build huge structures of notepads. You can archive all "Done" notes into the default archive. This also makes searching for old notes easy, since they will be in this archive file. Psion Shift will open the Archive notepad. Choose "Archive All Done" to copy notes that you are finished with into the Archive. (They must first be marked as done - Psion<->) Custom Archives can also be created. They are really just standard notepads that you will use as archives. For example, if you have a big project called "Home Maintenance", you may want all completed notes to go into a separate archive. Here's the steps for doing this. 1. Open the "House Maintenance" notepad 2. Add a new note called "House Archive", and save it. 3. Press the right arrow key to expand this note. Use Control if you have notepad set to auto- name expanded notepads. 4. Name the expanded notepad "Homedone". Later, when you are ready to archive items in the "House Maint" notepad, you can use the "Copy done" menu option to copy all completed notes into your archive file. To mark items as done, highlight the note, and press Psion<->. What is the Log? Notepad also has a feature to let you save the completion date of a note to a log file. The log is not a notepad. It is just a text file that has completed notes that you haved logged. To log a completed note use the menu option "Save Completed Date to Log". Why use a Log? The Log can be printed out showing you what date a project was completed. SECTION [3-1] Creating New Notepad files: Psion There are two ways to create a Notepad file. . The first is by highlighting Np on the system screen, and pressing Psion for new. Select the file name and the drive you wish to store your new notepad on. . The second way is from within Notepad by pressing Psion. NOTE: This creates a new top-level (Parent) Notepad that will show up under the Notepad icon on the system screen. To create expanded notepads that don't show up on the system screen, press the right arrow on a note to expand it. SECTION [3-2] Opening files: Psion There are two ways to open a Notepad file. . The first is from the system screen, by pressing Enter after highlighting the name of the Notepad file you want to open. . The second way is from within Notepad by pressing Psion for "Open". Note: You can store Notepad files on any drive, and they will show up on the system screen under the Notepad icon. (They must be .pad files created by using the "New" function, not expanded files.) Expanded files will not show up on the system screen since they will probably get too numerous. What are Expanded files? Expanded files are notepads that are created by expanding a note in your current notepad. When you press the right arrow to expand a note, you are creating a notepad file which automatically gets an (exp) file extension. It is called an expanded file by us but you can think of it in any way you like. (Project, Linked NP) Using Psion to open Application Files: This key combination will also give you the option of opening an application file other than Notepad. You are limited to Word, Data, or Sheet. This option has been added to give you easy access to the many application links that you create in Notepad. SECTION [3-3] Deleting a notepad or project file: Psion Shift The Delete option will look into the Note directory for files with the extension .pad . You can move through the directory with the arrow keys to find the notepad file you wish to delete. If you currently have a project file open and want to delete a .pad file, just press the tab key and open the \Note directory. All .pad files reside there. Be careful when deleting notepad files. Before you delete a file, check to see if there are notes in the file that link to other projects. You may want to delete the project files that are linked to these notes first if they are no longer applicable. Example: You have a notepad called: Master.pad it contains 3 notes: 1. Work 2. Business ----- 3. Projects | Client.exp |--- 1. Client list |--- 2. Big job In this case if you delete the Master.pad you may be inadvertently deleting the link to Client.exp. Now the link can always be recreated but you may not need Client.exp anymore, and now you may forget that it is even there. Wasted disk space. The way around this is to set the cursor to line 2 - Business and press Delete. Choose the option called "Expanded Notepad" and Np will delete this note,(Business) and the linked file which is Client.exp. On the other hand you may not want to delete this project (.exp) file so you may want to link it to another notepad somewhere. You can do this by setting the cursor to the note, and press the right arrow to expand the note. To link it to an existing note, select "Yes" when it says "Link to existing". Press the down arrow and find the .exp file to link to. (In the above example it would be Client.exp) SECTION [3-4] Sorting a Notepad: Psion To sort the current Notepad just press Psion. It will sort by priority, by Due Date, or by Note. This is selectable in the preferences. If you set Notepad to Auto Sort, you won't really have to worry about sorting. With Auto Sort turned on, Notepad determines when it needs to resort the data. Marked as Done items go to the bottom of the list when sorting. When sorting by Due Date, items are sorting based on Due Date first, secondly by Priority, and lastly alphabetically. Note: Pressing Psion<@> special options will let you toggle Auto Sorting on and off. SECTION [3-5] Show Info: Psion Shift Info displays information about the current open Notepad, as well as registration information. Info will also now show you the last modified date of the current notepad. SECTION [3-6] Open AutoFill: Psion Shift This option opens the database file called Autofill.dbf. This file has the commands for the AutoFill option. For info on how to edit this database see section 10-7. SECTION [4-1] Creating New Notes (Psion) To enter a new note, press Psion or just start typing your note. If the button bar is visible, certain characters are hotkeys and may launch other functions of Notepad. To get rid of the button bar, press Psion. Starting a new note brings up editor window. You can enter up to 510 characters per note. When you're done entering your note, press Psion or Psion to save it. The Note Details dialog comes up (if you use Psion), giving you the option of adding a Priority, Title, Style, Due date, Start Date, or Alarm. Note: Pressing Psion inserts the phone character. Use it in front of phone numbers that you want to be able to dial. Using Bring: While in the editor, you can "bring" data in from other applications if there is some text highlighted in an application that supports "bring". All of the built-in applications do support this. Press Psion to bring in some data. Priorities: A priority puts a number next to your note. Notes can be prioritized by number, or by name, although they both show as numbers when viewing notes. The priority names can customized by adding/editing the custom priority list. Titles: All Notes can have a title. The title can be up to 40 characters in length. Titles let you put a short description on a note, and then more in depth notes inside the editor. Styles: Notepad can display each note in a different style. This feature can be used as a way of marking certain notes. Dates: All notes can have a Start and Due Date. Notepad does a lot more with Due Dates however. Due Dates are saved in Notepad's project viewer, which is a type of calendar. Start Dates can be printed, but they are not shown in the viewer. To edit a Due Date, from the main screen, just press the tab key to bring up the 3 month calendar. Move to the Due Date you want and press Enter. Notepad saves your changes. To move into the Project Viewer, press the diamond key. Alarms: All notes can have alarms attached to them. What would a notepad be without alarms I ask you? To help make alarms work the way we think they should, the Server is provided as a separate program. It handles all alarms coming from Notepad. The benefit of the Server is that Notepad doesn't have to be running for it's alarms to ring. The Agenda on the other hand must be running for it's alarms to ring. (After the first Agenda alarm rings.) Alarms can be set from the Note Details dialog. Press the tab key on "Alarm" to open up the alarm options. Likewise, press the tab key on "Repeat" to open up the repeat options. SECTION [4-2] Entering data with a calculation: (Evaluate) When entering data, you can include calculations in the note. Press Psion while in the editor to evaluate the expressions. SECTION [4-3] Update/Edit a note: (Enter or Psion) Edit Details (Psion) Press Enter to edit the text contents of a note. This brings up the editor where you make changes to your notes. If you don't need to edit the text, but only some of the other details like style, or alarm, just press Psion to bring up the Details dialog. SECTION [4-4] Bring: Psion Notepad supports the Bring feature. This means that you can go to any Built-in Psion app, highlight some text, come back into Notepad, and press Psion while in the Editor, or from the main Notepad screen, and Notepad will bring the text in. Notepad can bring up to 510 characters, since this is the limit for a note. SECTION [4-5] Copy/Paste: Psion, Psion The Copy/Paste option works to allow pasting of notes between Notepads. Pressing Psion will copy the current note, and Pressing Psion will paste it into the current notepad. SECTION [4-6] Move Note: Psion This feature will let you move a single note to a different Notepad. Moving is not the same as copying. Moving copies a note to a notepad, and then deletes the original. If the note being moved has a due date, the project file will be updated to point to the new location. SECTION [4-7] Find: Psion When choosing the find option, a window comes up in the lower left hand part of the screen asking you for a search string. Type it in and if Np finds your selection it will highlight the found item. (See the next section for searching all notepad files.) SECTION [4-8] Search All: Psion Shift Press Psion-Shift to start this procedure. This option will search all drives for your search clue. The Find dialog will come up in the lower right part of the screen to differentiate itself from the standard find procedure. Find All will search through all notepads for your search string. If it finds a match you will be given the choice of opening the notepad where the match was found, or to continue searching. SECTION [4-9] * New * Text Editor New in Notepad v5.3 is access to the built-in text editor that is used by Word. Many thanks to Alasdair Manson for writing the code to make this available. The text editor is used when you enter a new note or edit a note. Here's how it works: Word wrapping happens automatically at the end of each line while you're typing. Note that pressing Psion or Psion will save the note. Psion doesn't bring up the details dialog, but Psion does. Pressing Enter will start a new line like in Word. Hold the shift key down and press the arrow keys to highlight text. With some text highlighted, Psion copies the text, and Psion pastes. Most key combinations are as they are in Word. . right/left arrow to move cursor . Control go to the start of next/previous word . Psion to the start/end of line . Psion deletes current line to the left of the cursor Special Notepad Additions: . Psion Time/Date Stamp. . Psion inserts phone character. (Needed for dialing) . Psion brings in any highlighted text in other applications. . Psion to edit the Title of the note. . Psion to zoom. Copy/Paste in Editor: To copy and paste text between notes, select some text in the editor, press Psion to copy. After closing this note, the copied text is saved to the clipboard, and is available to be pasted into another note. Bring support: Thanks to Tom Dolbilin and the work he did documenting Bring from OPL, Notepad supports Bring. Highlight text in any other built-in application on the S3a, go into Notepad and press Psion from the editor, or from the main Notepad screen. Notepad can also be a Bring Server, which lets you highlight some text in Notepad, and then bring this text into any application on your S3a that supports Bring. Time/Date Stamp: You can now insert the Time and Date by pressing Psion while in the Notepad text editor. The format is * Sat 11 Mar 1995 02:40pm * * Sat 11 Mar 1995 14:40 * (If you're S3a is set to 24hr time) This works in Fastnote as well. TaskList Support: Press Shift to bring up the TaskList. SECTION [4-10] Text Editor as Bring Server The Text Editor used in Notepad can also become a "Bring Server" or "Link/Paste Server" in Psion lingo. This means that you can highlight some text in the editor, and go to another application that supports bring, and pressing Psion to bring in the highlighted data from Notepad. All of the built-in applications support this, and some third party applications do as well. SECTION [4-11] Deleting Notes: Del key Use the delete key to delete notepad items. A Delete dialog comes up asking you which part of the current note you want deleted. You have various options. When deleting a note, or part of a note, you also now have the option of leaving the Due Date in the Project Viewer database alone. Current Note "Yes,No" Including Due Date "Yes,No" Other Options: None Due Date Alarm Link to Expanded Notepad Expanded Notepad Application Link Linked Application File All Priority [] All Notes Marked as Done (All) This may seem confusing. If it does, read this paragraph. Remember that selecting "Current Note" will delete every part of a note, except any linked files. The only special case besides linked files is whether or not the Due Date gets removed from the Project Viewer database. That's why this is selectable separately. (Second item) To state it again, if you just press Enter with Current Note set to "Yes", the note will be deleted, but any linked files will be left alone. So if you have a Word/Text file attached to the note, and want to delete it at the same time, then you should choose "Current Note", and also set Options to "Linked Application File". This will delete the note, and prompt you to delete the application file too. 1. "Current Note" deletes the current note. 2. "Including Due Date" removes the Due Date from the Project Viewer. 3. "Due Date" removes the Due Date from the note. Use this option when you only want to remove the Due Date from a note. 4. "Alarm" removes the alarm giving you the option to cancel it too. þ No need to select this if you are deleting the current note. 5. "Link to Expanded Notepad" removes the link to the expanded notepad. þ No need to select this if you are deleting the current note. 6. "Linked Notepad File" deletes the linked notepad file. (notepad files only.) 7. "Application Link" removes the link to an application file. The file itself is not touched. þ No need to select this if you are deleting the current note. 8. "Linked Application File" deletes the linked application file. Be careful with this one. Remember that this actually deletes the attached application file, like a Word, Data , or Sheet file. 9. "All Priority []" deletes all notes in the same priority as the one currently selected. When choosing this option, all other options are ignored, except the option to leave the Due Date alone. 10. "All Notes" deletes all notes in the current notepad. 11. "All Marked as done" deletes all crossed out notes. When choosing this option, all other options are ignored, except the option to leave the Due Date alone. If you try to delete a note with an alarm attached to it, Np will always ask you if you want to cancel the alarm associated with it. Likewise if you try to delete a note with a project date, Np will update the project data file. SECTION [4-15] Editing Priorities Control Pressing the Control Notepad brings up a special small window to edit the priority of the current note. If you press Control, a priority of 1 less than the current priority is suggested. This way if you wanted to move the priority level one level it can be done very fast. If you want more than one level just continue pressing the arrow key until you get to the priority level you want. Control works the same way, but suggests a priority level 1 higher. SECTION [4-16] Toggling Due Date/Start Date heading Press Psion<@> for the option to Toggle the heading from Due Date to Start Date and back. This will let you see your starting dates for notes instead of viewing Due Dates. SECTION [5-1] Set an Alarm: Psion The Alarms capability is an important feature of Notepad. It is important to have a program other than Notepad handling the alarms. When Notepad is shut down, it's alarms are still being handled. Most programs including the Agenda cannot do this. In the Note Details dialog enter the time and date of your alarm. You can also choose the sound to be used for the alarm. When you attach an alarm to a note, the bell character will be in the alarm field next to the note to show you that it has an alarm set. You can set the time and day, and the text of the note itself will become the message for the alarm. How does Notepad handle alarms? To handle alarms we wrote a separate application that talks to Notepad and can send data back and forth. It is called the Server. The fact that it is a separate application means that Notepad doesn't need to be running for the alarms to ring. This is important. You don't want your alarms to NOT function when Notepad is shut down. The Server is a stand alone application also. It can be used alone to set alarms. The alarm data that it uses does NOT have to come from Notepad, although most programs will not know about it. Special Alarm Feature: The Server snooze button. If an alarm is ringing and you aren't ready to take care of the item, you can hit a user defined snooze button. The S3a will not be locked in the alarm area until you cancel it, but will go on like normal letting you use any other programs. SECTION [5-2] Remove an Alarm: Psion Call up the Note Details, and press tab on the line that says "Alarm". Set Alarm to "No", and this will remove the alarm. A message will automatically be sent to the Server that the alarm data has changed. The Server will dump whatever it currently has queued and search the Alarm.dat file for new alarm info. This way if the alarm that you just removed was already queued, it will be canceled. SECTION [5-3] Refreshing an Alarm: Psion<#> Refreshing the alarms will open up the alarm.dat file to see if any of the alarms that were queued from the open notepad have expired. If so, the bell character that indicates an alarm being set will go away. The reason for this option is due to the fact that Notepad alarms can go off even though Notepad is not running. Therefore there is sometimes a need to refresh the alarm symbols. Notepad performs this function only when asked to by pressing Psion<#>. If you edit an alarm in the Alarm Server, Notepad will still keep track of this particular alarm. Every note has a unique number attached to it so that Notepad can't lose track of an alarm. SECTION [5-4] Repeating Alarms: First of all , repeating alarms is really a function of the Server, and not Notepad. Notepad supports repeating alarms, but the code to accomplish them is in the Server. (Server.opa) Here's a list of the possibilities: REPEATS: EXAMPLES: -------- --------- Hourly (every x hours) Daily (Every x days) Workday (Workdays, based on your system settings) Restday (Restdays, based on your system settings) Weekly (Weekly) Monthly by date (same date next month) Monthly by day (same day of week , next month, like third Wed.) Yearly (same day next year. Knows about leap years) Now this looks fairly simple and it is. What you see is what you get. But there is a method behind how they work in certain situations. METHOD: All repeating alarms repeat based on the original time and date received. What this means is that when an alarm is specified as being a repeating alarm, the time and date for the alarm is saved to file. If at any time the time and date are changed by using the snooze or the reset option from within the Alarm Server, the original time and date are remembered so that the Server will know how to handle repeats. Example: You have a yearly alarm set for a family members birthday, and it rings to tell you to give him(her) a call. For argument sake lets say it's set to ring at 9:30pm. Well at 9:30 it rings and you hit the snooze button, and again at 10:30, etc. The next time it rings, it's after 12:00 and now is the next day. If the Alarm Server was to reset the repeat based on the new time, it would ring a day late the next year, at 12:30am. This situation can be applied to all alarms and this is why repeating alarms are all based on their original time and date. Now there is a way to change this: In order to change this, use the Show/Reset option in Notepad, or the edit option in the Alarm Server. In these cases, it is assumed that you want to change the actual time for the repeat. SECTION [5-5] Checking Project Reminders: Psion Shift This option will show a reminder if there are any due or pastdue projects. You can set the preferences to automatically go directly to the project viewer at startup. Note: When the reminders come up at start-up, and your preferences are set to go directly to the project viewer, press Escape to cancel this action, or Enter to proceed to the project viewer. SECTION [6-1] Quick List Options: Escape, Psion Shift The Notepad Quick List is a list of frequently used notepads that are accessible by pressing the Escape key. This list is constantly being updated by Notepad. It puts the last opened notepad on the bottom of the list, until it reaches the maximum of 20 names. When deleting a file, any reference to it in the Quick List will be removed. As another tool in easy navigation,Notepad can now save 5 levels of previous open notepads, so that you can press the left arrow key to move backwards through the hierarchy. Notepad doesn't just remember your last notepad. For example: Look at these 5 notepads. All one level below each other. 1. Pelican 2. Products 3. Notepad 4. Np5.2 5. User Interface In this example, as you move back up the ladder by pressing the left arrow key, Notepad will get you all the way back to the top. So , instead of just remembering your last notepad, think of it as a ladder. Pressing the right arrow you go down the ladder, and pressing the left arrow Notepad gets you back up. Notepad only remembers 5 levels, so once you go beyond that, and press the left arrow key wanting to go back up the ladder, Notepad will start you at the 5th level, and go backward from there. Note: Once you open a Top Level notepad, the ladder is cleared and started fresh. Auto Build the List: First Press Escape, then choose "Build List" from the options. The Quick List Options allow you to save a list of frequently used notepads/projects. Add to this list by choosing the "Add New" option, and finding the notepads you wish to put on the list. These frequently used notepads will now be loaded and appear in the Quick List at start up. Note that the Project manager itself has options for setting and clearing this list. Press to see while in the main screen. SECTION [6-2] Application Link: L, Psion (special Psion<+>) This option will link any note to one of the following S3a Apps: . Word - Normal or Text Only . Data - Links to a file, and a record if needed. Notepad also gives you the option to use various database applications. . Data . Dataview . Dataview Pro . Data Deluxe . Act . Sheet Note: The database application to use is set in the preferences/files. Linking in Notepad creates better integration of data from different applications. The first time you press psion on a Note, you are asked to choose the application type that you want to link to. You can select Word, Data or Sheet. Choose one of these. Next, fill out the filename if you want to create a new file. Otherwise, press the tab key to locate the existing file that you want to link your note to. For example: If you want to link a note to a certain Word file that you know already exists, tell Notepad that you want to link to Word. Next press the tab key until you find the Word file that you want, highlight it, and press Enter. Press Enter again to save the Link. Notepad will now launch the Word file. New in Version 5 - The file you are linked to can be in any directory. This means that if you have a separate directory call \Letters that has Word files, you can link to these files, and Notepad will correctly find them. Support for "Linking to Word" in Text Only mode: This is the much asked for help for those that want longer notes, but don't want to save big Word files. This option opens text files into Word, but in text only format. The files will save as text only and therefore will be much smaller. This creates a \TXT directory to store these files. Note: Pressing Psion<+> will assume you want to link to a text only Word file. This way it mimics the way the Agenda works, which is something most users are used to. Creating a default Template in Word/Text Only mode: You must be in Word to create a default template. Do this by creating a new Word file in your default text directory. (Notepad defaults to \TXT.) Don't type any text on the page. Set up the font size, and all settings that you want to be default settings. Warning: Don't choose proportional fonts, as there is a bug in Word that will cause problems if you do this. For example, you may not want tabs to show when in your text editor. Set this in "Set Preferences". When you're done setting the file with all of your defaults, press Psion to save template. The template file is saved in the \WDR directory. The file is called "Default.$". SECTION [6-3] Editing the Link: Psion Shift Choose this option while highlighting a note with a link. You can edit, Change, or Delete a link from this option. One word of caution: Word files are big compared to Notepad files. If you need lots of extended notes, use the Text Only mode of Word. SECTION [6-4] Edit DataLink Control, Psion The DataLink is a new feature that links a note to a record in any database. To use it... 1. Choose Psion to create a link. 2. Choose Data as your Link type. 3. Press Enter after finding the database you want to link to. 4. Enter some text to search for in the database. That's it. Now every time you press Psion to go to the link, Notepad will open or jump to the database, and find the record you want too. Use the hotkey Control to edit the DataLink search text. SECTION [6-5] Custom Priority List: Psion Shift

The printing in Notepad has been completely overhauled. It now supports Print Setup, Print Preview, Printing through the ROM printer drivers, and support for PsiPrint. . You can still print to printer or to file. . You have the option of opening all expandable pads 10 levels deep or not opening them at all. . Printing with Dates will include the Starting and Due Dates, if they exist. . Printing Marked as Done lets you limit the printing to include these done notes or not. Marked as Done notes are printed prefixed with a *. You can also choose whether or not "Marked as Done" notes are expanded during printing. . Printing by Priority lets you print only notes that match a certain priority. If you give priorities project names, this will make it easy to print anything related to the project. If you use priority One as the most pressing notes, you can easily print out these notes only. . Printing by Matching text lets you search all notepads for a piece of text, and print the results. Print Setup: (Psion) Use the standard Psion to bring up the Print Setup dialog. Notepad will remember your settings, so these don't ever have to be reset unless you want to. Print Preview: (Psion<*>) Choosing Print Preview looks the same as "Print" at first. However, before any printing is started, print preview will show you the printed pages, giving you an opportunity to cancel if needed. SECTION [9-6] Echo Pro Support The new Echo Pro has something , amazingly, called notepads. It is a very nice feature for a PIM, and works similar to Notepad, except that due to the bigger screen they can expand on one screen. This makes it more like an outline. Due to the similarities we have included an Echo Pro Export feature. However, the feature works into our printing to file, so it shows up in the print dialog. Set the destination to "Echo Pro", and the file will be created that you can import into a notepad in Echo Pro. SECTION [9-7] Export: Psion Shift This new feature allows exporting of notepad files in two formats for now. . ASCII Text . Dbf This should help for those that need to get the text into another program. For exporting to Echo Pro, see the previous section. SECTION [10-1] Auto evaluate: Notepad can evaluate a mathematical calculations in the editor using Evaluate. (Psion) SECTION [10-2] Autodialer: Psion Notepad's new dialer will dial your phone calls for you through a modem or through the speaker. The new modem feature is very useful if you build a list of frequently used phone numbers. The other big improvement on this is the ability to use phone cards. The NP dialer will insert the card numbers in the right sequence. Phones database: Notepad supports a quick way to get to your phone list for dialing. The hotkey is Psion Shift. Your phone list must be an expanded notepad named Phones. (Phones.exp) If this notepad is found, pressing Psion Shift will open it, and open a search dialog. Here's how to set up your phone list: 1. Create a new notepad for your frequently used numbers. Call it Phones. 2. Go to DATA where your most used phone numbers are stored. 3. Highlight a name and number, goto to Notepad, press Psion to bring the data into Notepad. 4. Edit the note leaving at least the name and phone number. You may want to leave the notes in a format like this: Last Name, First Name Phone number This way the sorting will keep names in order. 5. While still in the editor, press Psion directly in front of the phone number. This will put the phone character in front of the phone number. Notepad uses this to determine the start of the phone number. Note: If a (1) is needed to dial out, don't forget to insert it also. 6. Press Enter to save the note. Setting up Credit Cards/Phone Cards: Press Psion on a note with a phone number. On the line that says "Credit Card Options", choose "Edit Card Info", and press enter. Enter the Opening Phone number, which in most cases would be the phone card 1-800 number. In cases where you typically dial 0+number, then card number+PIN, type in 0,# into the first field. This tells Notepad to start with zero, pause, and insert the number being dialed. Next enter your card number + PIN. Press Enter to save this info. Dialing Out: Highlight a note for dialing and press Psion. Make sure your modem is hooked up if you are going to dial through the modem. Press to dial through the modem, or Enter to dial through the speaker. You will hear the modem dialing. When it's done dialing, and the phone is ringing, pick up the phone, and press Enter on the Psion to release the line. Note: If you are using a phone card, you won't pick up the phone until the final number is dialed. Note: If your modem is off or not working, Notepad can get hung waiting for the modem to come online. You can press Psion to force Notepad to exit. Developing a Frequently used Phone List in Notepad: Using Bring it should be fairly easy to develop a quick list of frequently dialed phone numbers for auto dialing. The be backward compatible, you can also put the phone numbers inside brackets like these. {555-1212} (Instead of using the phone character.) Settings - Notepad now uses your built-in settings for setting the length, delay, and pause during dialing through the speaker. SECTION [10-3] Suggestions: To benefit from the Notepad linking I have experimented with a layout concept. The key is not to just create files indiscriminately. Rather create a Top Level Notepad (Parent), that contains main ideas you would want to expand on. This way only the Top Level Notepads will show up under the Notepad icon. The Lower level notepads don't show up, because they would get too numerous. Here's a suggestion to get used to using the Notepad Manager. Create a Notepad called Master (or Notepad.) Within Master create notes with headings of your own Hot topics. For example: 1. Personal 2. Business 3. Flights 4. Birthdays 5. Meetings 6. Big events - Friends wedding, etc. Next highlight one at a time and press the right arrow key. Expand each main topic giving them appropriate names. (You won't have to remember the notepad name, but it's helpful if you want to link the new notepad with other notes.) When the new notepad opens, you can start putting in relevant data. if you want it password protected, include the characters w4 in the filename. Press the left arrow key and you can go back to the Top Level Notepad. Now repeat this procedure for the other Projects/headings. SECTION [10-4] Credits Thanks to Tom Dolbilin for his work on supporting Bring from OPL. Thanks to Phil Creed for designing some great icons. Thanks to the beta testers for their hard work. Thanks to Chris Hennings at Right Hand Software Ltd for his work on the new printing features. Thanks to Alasdair Manson for his work on the new text editor. SECTION [10-5] Graphic Map Psion - Thanks to Wolfgang Schirmer for writing the Graphic Map - The Graphic Map is a graphic navigation tool for navigating your way through the hierarchy of notepads. It is sometimes helpful to be able to view your notepads from a birdseye point of view. The Map helps you to do this by showing all notepads, with lines connecting them to show the association they have to each other. Memory Requirements - 10-30k depending on how many notepads you have. Usage - The Map is easy to use. Press the help key for a list of commands. The menu key gives you an option to rebuild the map. Note that Notepad does not rebuild the map each time you bring it up, but it will tell you when it needs to be rebuilt, due to changes made in Notepad links. The Map also now has two formats. You can choose to show Application links or not. If you choose to show the app links, the Map may take more memory to display. With app links showing, pressing the Enter key launches the highlighted file. SECTION [10-6] TaskList The TaskList can be called up by pressing Shift. It meant to be a two handed operation using the right hand on the shift key, and the left on the tab. After pressing Shift, press Tab again to open up the list. This brings up a list of all running applications on you S3a. Move to an application and press Enter to jump to it. SECTION [10-7] AutoFill - Macros from Notepad AutoFill is a type of macro tool for Notepad that lets you automate certain features. This is a feature for power users, and setting up new autofill commands is probably not for the weak at heart. However, there are numerous hotkeys already set up for you to use. AutoFill lets you bring up some frequently used text in the text editor to save you time in entering it. You may frequently type in "Schedule a meeting for " This can be automated using AutoFill. A hotkey is already assigned for this particular phrase. (You can change this.) You would press / and then m quickly. The text editor is launched with the text heading already typed in. The AutoFill feature is activated by pressing the / key. (slash) When you press the / key, you have one second to press a corresponding hot key. This gives you some small macro capabilities. They are limited, but here are the possibilities. Press /Enter and the list will come up. Choose one and press Enter. The AutoFill macros are stored in the Autofill.dbf file, in the \app\npad directory. Here is the AutoFill Structure: Example AutoFill sequences: mSchedule a Meeting for o@Off b!Banker p>Ephones e^Myplug 1. One character hotkey - This is the key to press to start your macro. 2. Optional command byte - provides various extra functionality. 3. Text for AutoFill. (or filename for special cases) For example, if you want to set up a new AutoFill, from the main Notepad screen, press Psion Shift to go to the AutoFill database. Start a new record, and type in your desired hotkey plus the text to be called up. ( gGo to the Store) - Note: This type of hotkey is for filling the editor with some often used text. Special cases: Use of the @ command byte character is for a very special case. This tells Notepad to run a built in procedure inside Notepad. Off is one that turns the machine off. @Stamp is one that calls up the time/date stamp. The ! character is more useful for most. Type in the hotkey, plus the ! command byte, plus the process name that you want to jump to. Example: b!Banker would setup AutoFill to jump to Banker (if running) when pressing /b. (forward slash + b) The > command byte character is used for forcing Notepad to open a notepad. This is helpful is you have certain notepad's that you use often, and want a hotkey to get there. This command byte requires a slightly different format. hotkey + > + type + notepad Type = T for Top level, E for Expanded Example: n>TNotepad - /n opens a top level notepad b>EBusiness - /b opens an expanded notepad The ^ command byte character lets you launch a Plugin. The text after the ^ character is the name of the plugin to run. Notepad searches all directories for your plugin. Make sure you close the AutoFill database when you're done editing it. SECTION [10-8] Remove Link to Expanded Notepad: Shift, or Delete To remove a link to an expanded notepad, leaving the note itself alone, you can press Shift on the note, or press Delete, and set the options to "Link to Expanded Notepad". Set "Current Note" to No, unless you want to delete the note as well. SECTION [11-1] Pelican Server About the Server The Pelican Server is a stand alone application that runs separate from Notepad. Filename: Server.opa. This is a rewrite of the original Pelican Alarm Server, which handled only alarms. The new version , just called Server, now handles Alarms and SoundOFF events. Pelican's SoundOFF program has been combined with the Alarm Server to make one product. Technical explanation Its function is to queue up all Notepad alarms. All alarms will work like the built in S3a system alarms. All alarm info is stored in the "M:\App\Aserver\alarm.dat" file. How does it work? The Server runs as a separate program, (Server.opa) and runs in the background, for the most part. As you set alarms in Np, messages are sent to the Server that there is new alarm information that needs to be looked at. When the Server receives this message, it does one of two things. 1. Queue the alarm, if there are none already queued. 2. If the Server already has an alarm queued, it checks to see if there is a newer alarm now than the one that is currently queued, (which would be canceled), or the current alarm information may have changed. Maybe you had an alarm set to go off at 3:00, but now you want it to ring at 5:00. In Np you would press Psion shift to reset alarm. After resetting the alarm Np will send a message to the server that alarm info has changed. ** Note ** All functions in Np that affect alarms send messages to the Alarm Server. For this reason it is important that the Server is running. What if the Server is not running? If the Server is not running the alarm info will still be saved to file, but the alarms will not ring since they are not being queued. They will ring as soon as the Server is started. (which may be too late!) SECTION [11-2] How do I start the Server? There are two ways to start it running. The first way is to press Psion<@> for options, choosing "Jump to Server". This starts the Server if it isn't already running. The second way is from the system screen by installing the Server icon on the screen. (Use Psion) (if you copied the Server.opa to your \app directory.) The installer does copy it there. The Server.opa must be in an \app directory. SECTION [11-3] Server functions How is the Server useful without Notepad? The Server is not a dumb background program. You can add new alarms from the Server, or edit any existing alarms. Adding new alarms is a very nice feature. Maybe you want to add a quick alarm, but Np is not running. You can go to the Server application, press Enter and add an alarm. It will not show up in Notepad as a note, but you will get your alarm. For more on the Server, see the file Server.txt SECTION [12-1] Project Viewer P, , or Control (See note) Note: Mondays are in Bold in the Project Viewer. You can get to the Project Viewer either by pressing the P hotkey, or by pressing the diamond key. There are two main views in Notepad. Main, and Project Viewer. Note: Pressing

alone only works when the button bar is disabled. Each time you save a note with a Due Date, it gets sent to the Project Due Date file. These Due Dates can be viewed in a graphic format in the Project Viewer. You will see each day of the month, with a block under the day that has an item due. Each day can have up to five projects due. Note on using Control: If you want to enter the Project Viewer going directly to the month and day of a certain Due Date, highlight the note, press Ctrl instead of just , and Notepad will take you directly to the month and day of the highlighted note. Use the menu key to see options. Use the arrow keys to move around the viewer between days. Of course you must have at least one due date for the viewer to show you the current month. While viewing, use the < and > keys to change months, or the menu key gives you the option to jump to a month. The Project Viewer pops up a window on the top of the screen that shows you the text of the highlighted block. Open Notepad to View: While in the Project Viewer, you can press Psion to select a certain notepad file. This will set the Viewer to show only due dates from the open notepad. Getting Help while in the Project Viewer: You can get help about the Project Viewer itself by pressing the help key while in this view. However, if you want general help, you can call it up by pressing Ctrl. Editing a Due Date: Press Enter to edit a due date. When you edit a Due Date from the Project Viewer, the note it came from is also edited. Delete a Due Date: When you highlight a Due Date in the Project Viewer, and press Delete, you have the option of deleting the Due Date from the Project Viewer database. Note that the Due Date is also removed from the note itself. Tidy Feature: On the menu you will find the option called "Tidy Due Dates". Notepad will look into the Project Viewer database, and erase any Due Dates between the starting and ending dates that you set. Note that this will also remove the Due Dates from the note itself. Mark as Done: You can mark a note as done by pressing Psion<-> while highlighting the note that you want to mark. Notepad gives you the option of removing this due date from the viewer, or leaving it. If you don't remove it, the note itself will get marked as done, but the actualy due date will remain in the project viewer. Report Past Due: This menu option will create a list of all Past Due items. The file is created in a \TXT directory. This will be given the option of viewing this file directly. Alternatively, you could create a note, and link it to the report file. Jump to Displayed Notepad This feature lets you jump to the notepad of the project Due Date being viewed. It exits the viewer opening this notepad for viewing in the main Notepad view. Use Shift or Psion Shift. Show Parent Notepad Press Psion

or the space bar to see what notepad the current note belongs to.

This option lets you build your own lists of priority terms. This helps to make Notepad more personal, since nobody would ever agree on which list was better. What is a priority term? Notepad assigns a priority level to all notes. There are 40 levels of priorities in Notepad. We have assigned to these priorities numbers like 1,2,3,4 etc. to signify the level of importance. These can be changed by you to names if you like, to make them more suitable to your own way of prioritizing todo items. When you choose "Custom Priority" from the main menu, a dialog comes up with five choices. 1. Add a New.. - lets you choose new names 2. Edit Item - lets you edit names 3. Delete Item - lets you delete names 4. Delete all - Deletes the entire list 5. Quit - quits back to the main screen If you don't like the default priority names, you can build your own list. Use "New" to add a new item. Use "Edit" to make changes to your current list. Use "Delete" to selectively get rid of any item on the list. There is a maximum of 40 items in the list at this time. If you already have 40 items and want to add more, you'll have to delete something off the list first. Note: You can customize various settings related to priorities in the preferences. In the preferences you can choose whether you want priorities in front of each note, or just numbers. SECTION [6-6] Expand Options: Psion Shift Expand Options refers to the Notepad links that are created to link a note to another notepad. |- Main Notepad -| 1 Letters ---> 2. |--- Letters ---| 3. 1. Letter to Psion 4. 2. Letter to Amex 3. Letter to New World The options are: 1. Edit - edit the current link 2. Rename - Lets you rename the current linked Notepad 3. Remove - remove the link information * NOTE * There are no limitations to how deep the notepads can go. The only danger is when creating too many links to too many files, it can get confusing. If you delete a file that has a link in it, you may be losing the only link through to certain notepads. Of course you can always re-link a note to any project, so the data is never lost. Editing the Link: Here you have the option of re-linking a current note to a different notepad. Choose drive and file. Renaming an Expanded notepad: Choose this option when you want to rename the expanded notepad that a note is linked to. When you choose this option, not only is the expanded notepad renamed, but the link is updated to point to the new name. Removing a Link: This option will unlink this note so that it will not be linked to any other notepad. SECTION [6-7] Save Note to Agenda: Psion Shift First as an overview, this feature was added to Notepad so that you would have a way to get key notes into your Agenda. Notepad does this by first having you identify your default Agenda filename. This name gets saved to Notepad's settings file, so unless you change your Agenda filename in the future, this only has to be set once. You can also get to this in the preferences. Once you've told Notepad the name of your default Agenda file, you can save any note to your Agenda. Notepad does this by first looking for all running Agenda files, since you could have more than one running. If it finds your default Agenda running, it shuts it down. Next your new Agenda Entry is saved, and lastly your Agenda is launched again. This all happens in the background and you should not notice any slow down from doing this. However, there are instances where you may notice a delay, like in the rare case where you are doing a search in your Agenda, and it hasn't completed. In this case, Notepad pauses for a few seconds and tries again to shutdown your Agenda. Finally Notepad will pop up a message telling you that your Agenda file is busy. Note that your Agenda file is only launched if Notepad had to shut it down. If it wasn't running, Notepad will NOT launch it. When launching your Agenda again, you have the option of having Notepad reset Agenda's view to the view you were in when the Agenda was shut down. See the preferences for this. Saving a Note to Agenda: Saving a Note to Agenda brings up a dialog letting you set up an Agenda Entry. You can create Timed and Untimed Agenda entries. If you choose "Untimed", the other information in the dialog is not used, except the alarm. This can be set. If you choose "Timed", all of the information in the dialog is important. With Timed Entries Notepad will suggest the Due Date of a note if one has been given, unless it's past due. You need to set the Start time, duration, and alarm information. Alarms are off by default. Writing your new Agenda Entry takes only a second. If you have your preferences set to reset the last view in Agenda, it will take a few extra seconds. Preferences let you choose the style for an Agenda entry. SECTION [6-8] Merge Notepad: Psion<~> You can merge notepad or other database files together with this option. In the case of non Notepad files, the data must be in the first field. This can be a very useful option, in the case where you want to reorganize your todo lists by subject. After you merge two notepads you will be prompted to delete the file that was merged into the open notepad. You may or may not want to do this but I felt the option was needed. Make sure to choose the correct file type. (Notepad v5.x or Dbf) SECTION [6-9] Plug-Ins: Psion The Plug-Ins option will check for installed Plug-Ins, and if it finds any, will display them as menu items. Read the Plug-Ins text file for more info about writing Plug-Ins for Notepad. What are Plug-Ins? Plug-Ins are Opl program modules that anyone can write to interact with Notepad's data. Notepad was written with this idea in mind. Realizing that Pelican Software couldn't think of everything, the idea behind Plug-Ins is to allow users to add to the program in some way. Contact us for documentation if you are interested in writing plugins. Note that all Plug-Ins (*.plg) files should go into the \App\Npad\Plug directory. Plug-Ins are loaded automatically if they are in the \App\Npad\Plug directory. There is no need for any program to load them. (Plug-Ins must have a .plg extension) Plug-Ins makes Pelican products the most customizable programs available for the S3a. SECTION [6-10] The Notepad Ladder (left arrow) The Notepad Ladder refers to the way Notepad remembers how to get back to your previous notepads as you open new ones. Notepad can now remember 5 levels of previous open notepads, returning to them when you press the left arrow key. This is a significant improvement. It also means that the method for saving previous notepads has changed. No longer does Notepad just remember your last notepad. Now Notepad saves in a downward direction only. Five levels down. For example: Look at these 5 notepads. All one level below each other. 1. Pelican 2. Products 3. Notepad 4. Np5.1 5. User Interface In this example, as you move back up the ladder by pressing the left arrow key, Notepad will get you all the way back to the top. So , instead of just remembering your last notepad, think of it as a ladder. You go down the ladder, Notepad gets you back up. Notepad only remembers 5 levels, so once you go beyond that, and press the left arrow key wanting to go back up the ladder, Notepad will start you at the 5th level, and go backward from there. Note: Once you open a Top Level notepad, the ladder is cleared and started fresh. SECTION [7-1] Open Archive: Psion Shift This option will open the file that contains all of the notes moved by the "Archive All Done" option. The Archive file is actually a standard notepad. This makes is easy to view notes that have been marked as done. SECTION [7-2] Archive All Done: Psion Shift This will copy all "done" items to a separate notepad that stores only "done" items. The notepad is called "Archive". The benefit to using this method is that your done items will be more organized. You'll be able to any time and see what projects or todo's were completed. SECTION [7-3] Copy Done: Psion Shift This feature lets you copy all "Marked as Done" items to a specific notepad, instead of archiving to the single archive file. This way you can create as many archives as you like, and using "Copy Done" copy items that are marked to your own archive. Here's an example of how to create your own archive. If I have a notepad called Bigdeal, I might create a new note inside Bigdeal called Archive. Expand this note, and call the expanded notepad "BigArch". Next, copy all "Marked as Done" items to the file called BigArch. Now you've linked a note called Archive to a special notepad which has become an archive file for Bigdeal. SECTION [7-4] Log Note as Completed: Psion Shift The log file is a file saved by Notepad when you press psion<-> to mark an item as done. You will be asked if you want to save the date of completion of this project to the log file. If you answer "Yes", the note, Due date, and completion date will be saved to file. Clear Log: Psion Shift This option lets you clear the log file of all entries. Print Log: Psion Shift Connect your printer and this will display the Note, the projected Due date and the actual completion date. Notepad writes by default a file called \Txt\Nplog.txt. This is a plain text file, although it opens fine in Word. Printing the Log gives you the option of appending this file each time, instead of creating a new file. You should definitely choose to append the file if you want to keep a running log. SECTION [7-5] Open Fastnote: Psion Shift To view all notes in fastnote, use this option. There is even a faster way to do this. You could keep a note on your top level notepad called Fastnote, and this note could expand (link) to the Fastnote.exp file. SECTION [7-6] Merge Fastnote: Psion Shift This option lets you merge the notes in Fastnote into any notepad, one note at a time. You can of course view all notes in fastnote by just opening it as a standard notepad. This operation is to help speed things up. (Use Psion Shift to Open Fastnote) SECTION [8-1] UTILS Pop up Calculator: /+Zero key The calculator will take multiple operators. Example: 5*87.54\34-6+433 After hitting enter to get the answer, Psion will take you in reverse back to the original calculation. Use the help key for help. The calculator can also now be moved around the screen by pressing the diamond key, and then the arrow keys. Notepad remembers your calculator position on the screen, and uses it the next time you call it up. SECTION [8-2] Calendar (tab key) Pressing the tab key brings up a 3 month calendar. This calendar does more than just show you the date. The due date of the highlighted note can be adjusted by moving to a due date on the calendar, and pressing Enter. Notepad will prompt you to update the due date of the highlighted note. SECTION [8-3] Paste Into Psion Shift Sometimes you may want to copy a note to another notepad. Pasting Into gives you a fast way of doing this. First Psion copies a note. Next instead of opening the notepad you want it pasted to , just highlight a note that expands to the notepad where you want it, and press Psion Shift. The notepad will be opened and the note pasted. SECTION [8-4] Mark as Done When a note is completed you can mark it as done by pressing the space bar or Psion<->. Notepad will put a line through the note to show you that it is done. Use the Archive All Done option to copy marked notes to the Archive file. If the note has a Due Date, you will be prompted to remove the Due Date from the Project Viewer. Notepad will also prompt you to save the completion date to the Log, unless this is turned off in the preferences. (General/Save to Log..) Marking as Done in the Project Viewer - Pressing Psion<-> in the Project Viewer will also mark a note as done. SECTION [8-5] Open Top Level Notepad (Psion, Psion Shift) This gives you a way to jump back to the top level Notepad very quickly. Top Level Indicator Next to the Alm Heading, Notepad shows an arrow facing upward when the current open notepad is a Top Level notepad. SECTION [8-6] Auto-Numbering Notes Psion<\> Use the feature when you want to renumber the priorities of all notes in the current open notepad. The notes will be renumbered in the order they are shown. SECTION [9-1] Set Preferences: -, or Psion Notepad stores various preferences allowing you to set the program up to work in a way more to your liking. GENERAL Preferences: 1. Auto Sort Yes,No 2. Default Dialing No Card, Use Card Explanation of options: AUTO SORT If you set "Auto Sort" to Yes, the current Notepad will be sorted after entering or updating data. Note: Pressing Shift will temporarily toggle Auto . Sorting on and off. SORT METHOD There are three choices for sorting. You can sort by Priority, by Due Date, or by Note. Choose Due Date only if you tend to rely on Due Dates. SOUND Notepad doesn't use much sound, but turning it off should stop all beeps. DISPLAY TOP BUTTON BAR Use this option to remove or reinstall the button bar in the main Notepad display. COLOR OF TOP BUTTON BAR Notepad has a bar along the top of the screen. You can change the color of this bar. There are three choices, Black (Default), Grey, or Dot pattern. PASSWORD PROTECTION Decide whether or not you want a Password dialog to come up when starting the program. USE LESS MEMORY (MORE REDRAWS) This is a memory saving option. If you want Notepad to use a bit less memory when in the background, choosing YES for this option will force Notepad to close all of it's windows when it's in the background. This releases the memory used to create these windows. However, if you use this feature you will see the windows being opened when you come back into Notepad. This makes it a bit slower. Secondly, this option will force the Editor to use the same Window as the main Notepad view, which forces a redraw each time you leave the editor. If you leave this option set to NO, the Editor uses it's own window, and there is no redrawing when you return from the Editor. SAVE TO LOG WHEN MARKING DONE When you press the Psion<-> on a note to mark it as done, you can have the "Save to Log" prompt come up automatically at this point. This saves the note to a Log file with completion date. SET ALARM AFTER ENTER Alarm after Enter lets you decide whether you want the prompt to add an alarm after entering data to each note. If you set this to "No", Notepad won't ask you to set an alarm after entering a new note. You can still enter alarms though from the menu. SET DEFAULT TIME FOR NEW ALARM Setting a default time for "Set Alarm" allows you to set a time that will be used as the default instead of the current time when you are setting an alarm using Psion. In other words if you always set alarms for 6:30pm, than set this option to 6:30pm, and every time you go to set an alarm it will come up with this time as default. CHOOSE SOUND FILE WHEN SETTING ALARMS When setting an Alarm after entering a new note, or when selecting the Set Alarm option on the menu, you have the option to choose the sound you want to be used for the alarm. If you have many sounds on your Psion, you may not want this option since it can get slow building a list of all sound files on all drives of your Psion. If you don't have that many sound files, it shouldn't slow you down. USE TITLES IN ALARMS When setting an alarm for a note, this gives you the choice to use the Title of a note instead of the whole text of the note itself. DEFAULT DRIVE FOR EXPANDING NOTES To save time, Notepad now lets you select your default drive for expanding notes. You can still choose a drive by pressing Escape when Notepad prompts you for a filename for the expanded notepad. AUTO NAME NOTEPADS WHEN EXPANDING This option forces Notepad to create all expanded notepad's without asking you for a filename. Notepad determines the filename for you. The advantage of naming them yourself is that you will recognize the name if you need to link other notes to this expanded notepad. DEFAULT DIRECTORY FOR WORD-TEXT FILES By default this is set to \TXT\. You can choose any directory you like. This option is used when you save extended notes as Text Only Word files. DATABASE PROGRAM Choose the database program that you are using, so that when Notepad links to a database it will know which program to launch. DEFAULT DATABASE Use this option to set the default database to use when creating Datalinks. If you mainly use one database, this will save some time. SET ALL DATE OPTIONS This gives you a way to turn off all date options. Date options include Due Dates and Starting Dates. Set this option to "Off" if you don't want to be prompted for any Dates. SET DUE DATE ON BY DEFAULT The "Save with Due Date" option comes into play when entering data. You may like to have this option set to "Yes" by default if you usually do save all of your notes with a Due date. If you don't save your notes with a Due date you'll want to set this to "No". PROMPT FOR STARTING DATE FOR NEW NOTES This feature lets you decide whether or not Notepad uses Starting Dates for each note. Some users don't need this at all, so it is appropriate for it to be a preference. DISPLAY DUE DATE REMINDERS AT STARTUP You decide whether or not you want Notepad reminding you of a note that is due today. Sometimes reminders get in the way, so Notepad gives you a choice as to whether you want this reminder or not. DISPLAY PAST DUE REMINDERS AT STARTUP You decide whether or not you want Notepad reminding you of Past Due notes. JUMP TO PROJECT VIEW AFTER REMINDERS This is only applicable at startup. This forces Notepad to go directly to the Project Viewer at startup if there are any projects due on the current day. (Or past due if you have them set in the preferences to be displayed.) Note that if you have Notepad set to go directly to the Project Viewer, you can press Escape while viewing reminders to stop Notepad from going to the Project viewer. DISPLAY REMINDERS AFTER DATE CHANGE Set this to "Yes" if you want the reminders to come up in the morning to remind you of any due dates, current or past. The Date changing on the machine triggers this. FONT SIZE IN EDITOR You may like to have a set font size in the Text Editor. This lets you save your favorite size. PROMPT "Abandon Changes" IN EDITOR When pressing Escape in the Text Editor you may want Notepad to remind you that you are about to lose your changes. Set this to "Yes" if you want this warning. INITIAL CURSOR POSITION IN EDITOR This controls the initial cursor position when editing a note. If you prefer to have the cursor at the top of a note, set this to "Beginning". Setting this option to "End" is faster for contuining to edit a note. SET PRIORITY LIST Set priority list lets you decide whether to use the default priority list or the custom list. BULLET ENTRIES ON TOP LEVEL (EXPANDED) NOTEPADS WITH These two preferences set the type of bullets you get in Top Level and Expanded notepads. The choices are "Priorities" or "Numbers". PROMPT FOR PRIORITY AFTER ENTERING A NOTE This is a time saving feature. When set to "No", you will not be prompted for a priority number. Notepad will give it a priority based on it's position in the list when entering a new note. When editing a note, it will not change the priority. MARKED AS DONE NOTES GO TO BOTTOM The default is to force notes that have been crossed out to the bottom of the list. If you don't want Notepad to do this, set this preference to "No". DEFAULT AGENDA FILE Show Notepad your default Agenda file for saving notes to Agenda. RESET LAST AGENDA VIEW WHEN RESTARTING AGENDA When you save a note to Agenda, Notepad has to shutdown your Agenda if it's open, save the note, and reopen your Agenda. When it does this, you have the option of having Notepad set Agenda to the view you had it in when it was closed down. If you choose this option it takes a few extra seconds after saving a note to Agenda. For this reason it is a user option. SECTION [9-2] Password Protection: Psion Shift You can password protect your notepad files by turning password protection on in the preferences. Use this option to set the password, or to change the password. New Password ------------ Enter Password: Confirm Password: If you press Esc here, no password will be set. The password is not case sensitive. In order to change the password, you must know the current password. This protects you from the possibility of someone else changing your password. Password protecting individual files: As an easy method for password protecting individual notepad files, just include the characters w4 in the filename of any notepad file, and it will require a password to open it. This may seem to easy a code to break, but most people wouldn't think of renaming the file to get access to it. If you try to set the password to Blank, Notepad will ask you if you want to turn off password protection. If you have protection turned off, and you enter a new password, Notepad will ask you if you want to turn protection on. SECTION [9-3] Zoom In This feature lets you increase the font size. You have a choice of four different sizes. Use Zoom Out to go in reverse. SECTION [9-4] Zoom Out The opposite of Zoom In, this reduces the font size. SECTION [9-5] Printing Psion
