It was suggested to me by 'Pensioneer' (a Pscience5 contributor) recently that it'd be useful to have an online collection of User Manuals for printers that are known to work with Psion's. This because many of the original printers that were known to work with them are no longer available new and are tending to be bought 2nd-hand from eBay, etc. - often without manuals. Also, there are probably a number of new printers that work directly with the Psions and/or using Andrew Johnson's drivers - but no one seems to be keeping tabs on which do and which don't.

Andrew Johnson has also kindly given me permission to link directly to his driver file downloads here as well as keep local copies of everything lest 'something happen' to his website - thanks Andrew.

If you have any User Manuals for machines that you know to work with your Psion and would like to contribute, please email them to me (preferably compressed - they tend to be pretty large!) and I'll be glad to add them to the page.

Canon BJC-80 Printer Driver for EPOC (9KB) ER5 v1.10a Canon, Citizen, Epson Andrew Johnson's Printer Driver for EPOC. Provides more fonts and font sizes than Psion's, and also prints outline and shadow effect fonts. It prints more of the EPOC international characters, and there's even a representation of the Euro character (it's not very good, but at least it's recognizable!). It should drive any recent printer that is compatible with the Epson ESC/P2 command set.
Known to work on:
• Canon BJ-10sx, BJ-30, BJC-50, BJC-55, BJC-70, BJC-80, BJC-85, BJ-200ex, BJC-250, BJC-4550
• Citizen PN60i
• Epson Stylus Colour II, Stylus Colour 760
CXM Raster Graphics Printer Driver, EPOC (5KB) ER3 v0.03a Canon, Epson These are Andrew Johnson's EPOC printer drivers for Canon BubbleJet and Epson Stylus Colour printers. It uses the built in EPOC fonts to do character rendering, allowing you to install and use new fonts for printing, and to print monochrome documents in landscape. It uses special raster graphics printing commands to provide a more efficient data transfer to the printer, which is necessary when sending a whole page as graphics, and the results are comparable or even better in printing time to Andrew's original BJC-80 driver. This driver currently only prints in monochrome though, for colour output you have to use the BJC-80 driver.

EPOC Release 3 did not contain the necessary font software to support FontMachine, but owners may be able to use Alexander Zavorine's EPOC Font Utilities to generate EPOC-format fonts on a Windows system that will print out properly with this driver.

Printers Supported
Printers that support Canon's Extended Mode (ie BJC-xxx devices) and (experimental) Epson Raster Graphics.

Known to work on:
Canon BJ-30, BJC-50, BJC-55, BJC-80, BJC-85, S400
Should also work on:
Epson Stylus Color models
Known to not work on:
BJC-5100 (this printer doesn't understand Extended Mode commands)
MultiPASS C100 (Canon won't provide documentation)

Known Problems
16-Gray graphics only output 4 gray levels
• If you print a 16 gray-level MBM graphic image, it will only be printed as 4 levels. This is because the internal buffer that is used for the raw output data is only 1 bit deep (black & white only), and EPOC contains code that dithers from 2-bit deep images, but nothing more for 4-bit images so they only use the 2-bit dither process. This might change if/when the driver ever supports colour, but don't hold your breath waiting.

FontMachine font selection problem
• If you have mBrainSoft's FontMachine and you install a font with the same name as one of the built-in fonts (e.g. Arial), you might not be able to use the added font without deleting the built-in font from the FontMachine control panel. This occurs because of the name clash, fonts are selected by name.
CXM Raster Graphics Printer Driver, EPOC (5KB) ER3 v0.04 Canon, Epson Version 0.04 adds experimental support for Epson's Raster Graphics commands, so should work on most recent ESC/P2 printers including those that don't have built-in fonts and thus don't work with the BJC-80 driver.
CXM Raster Graphics Printer Driver, EPOC (5KB) ER5 v0.03a Canon, Epson When used on an EPOC Release 5 system, this driver works with mBrainSoft's FontMachine software, which allows you to install scalable TrueType and other fonts into the system for display purposes; with this driver such fonts will print properly too.
CXM Raster Graphics Printer Driver, EPOC (5KB) ER5 v0.04 Canon, Epson Version 0.04 adds experimental support for Epson's Raster Graphics commands, so should work on most recent ESC/P2 printers including those that don't have built-in fonts and thus don't work with the BJC-80 driver.
Epson ESC/P2 Printer Driver Extension (2KB) v0.01 Epson This is an add-on to Andrew Johnson's BJC-80 driver for American model Epson ESC/P2 printers, which he thinks includes US-model Canon BubbleJets.

Printers Supported
Only US-model Epson and compatible printers with the ESC/P2 command set that have built-in TrueType fonts (NB: European model printers usually don't).

Known to work on:
(none so far!)
Known to not work on:
Canon BubbleJets from European countries
Some recent Epson Stylus Color models (look at the latest CXM driver for possible support of these.)
Installation Instructions
After unzipping the file you have to manually copy it into the C:\System\Printers directory on your Psion. Note that you must also have a version of his BJC-80 driver installed for this to work.
Epson Stylus Color II Manual (404KB) Epson Zipped PDF of Reference Manual for the Epson Stylus Color II.
HP PCL3/PCL5 Printer Driver for EPOC (9KB) ER5 v1.06 HP This is Andrew Johnson's EPOC Release 5 printer driver for Hewlett-Packard PCL3 and PCL5 printers. This driver works with mBrainSoft's FontMachine software, which allows you to install scalable TrueType and other fonts into the system for display purposes; these fonts will print properly with this driver. There is no version of this driver for ER3 machines (the original Series 5) because the built-in PCL5 driver works fine in ER3.

Is my HP printer supported? It doesn't work...
Some HP printers don't use the PCL3 or PCL5 printer control languages. For these devices you can only print using PsiWin and "Print via PC". The following HP printers are known not to work because they use different languages:

• DeskJet 820 (Performance Printing Architecture)
• LaserJet 1200 (PCL6 or PCL-XL)
HP Deskjet 890C User Guide (309KB) HP Zipped PDF of User Guide for the HP Deskjet 890C.
HP Deskwriter 600C User Guide (1.7MB) HP Zipped PDF of User Guide for the HP Deskwriter 660C (Appletalk version of Deskjet 660C I believe).
HP Laserjet 5/M/MP/N/P User Guides (15KB) HP Zipped PDF of User Guides for the HP LaserJet 5/M/MP/N/P models.
Pentax PocketJet 200 Driver for EPOC (14KB) v1.00 Pentax An EPOC printer driver for the Pentax PocketJet 200.
PostScript Printer Driver for EPOC (15KB) ER3 v1.10 PostScript printers Andrew Johnson's EPOC printer driver for PostScript printers. As with the Canon driver you should download the right file for your particular machine as the two are slightly different due to differing bugs in the two EPOC software releases.

The driver provides two printer models, both of which print graphics at 300dpi and offer both Landscape and Portrait page orientations. The first model is intended for printers that only have the basic 13 standard fonts built in (i.e. Courier, Helvetica and Times, their Bold and Italic/Oblique variations, and the Symbol font). Many PostScript printers will support the Adobe extended 35-font set, for which the second printer model is used. The only character missing is the Euro - sorry, it's not in the PostScript character set!

The driver for EPOC Release 3 (original Series 5 and GeoFox) fixes a bug in the printing subsystem which prevents documents from printing that use more than 10 different font size & style combinations. If you intend to print using the IR port and haven't already done so you will need to download the Series 5 IrDA Update from Psion's Free Software area (this only applies to ER3 machines).
PostScript Printer Driver for EPOC (15KB) ER5 v1.10 PostScript printers The driver for EPOC Release 5 (for the MC218, 5mx, 5mxPro, Revo and Series 7) fixes a different bug in the print subsystem, which causes all text to be output more than once, usually in the same place on the page. This bug actually affects all the printer drivers shipped with ER5.

Known Problems:
• Series 7 and netBook owners - you can print coloured text with this driver, but graphics will only print in black because the PostScript Level 1 standard doesn't provide the facilities to print coloured bitmaps.
• There is a bug in EPOC Release 5 that prevents background shading in spreadsheet cells from printing properly if they include any text.
Seiko DPU-3445 Printer Driver for EPOC (10KB) v1.00 Seiko DPU-3445 printer driver for Psion Series 5 and 5mx (EPOC 32). Features:-

This driver supports printing in both Portrait and Landscape mode.

• All graphics drawing primitives (including texts) are rasterized to a bitmap on computer.
• The epoc32 printing process prints each page as a number of bands.
• The print process processes the bands top-to-bottom in Portrait mode (or left-to-right in Landscape mode), the driver finds non blank pieces of each separate band, converts them to format compatible with the printer and sends them to the printer as bit images.
• You can print through infrared port or to a file. To print through serial port the proper cable should be provided to connect a Psion with a printer.
• There is custom printer setup dialog. It can be called from standard Epoc Print Setup dialog.
• You can setup through it the following printer properties:
-- Scale-down printing (On / Off)
Print one page of data with the size set for [Paper
Size] on the Print dialog window by reducing it down to
112mmx158mm size.
-- Paper type:
Thick paper(145micron);
Thick paper(125micron);
Normal paper;
High-proof paper;
2-ply paper;
Label paper;
-- print density (65%-135%)
-- Paper mode: Cut Sheet or Roll paper
(but user also should setup the same paper mode on printer independently)
